Strengthening of the Non Governmental Organizations Section of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs

The head of ICA acts as Secretary of the COP and COP MOP the programme assists the President in the planning and organization of sessions of the COP and COP MOP, meetings of the Bureau, and informal high level consultations.

The decree provides wide powers to the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and the Humanitarian Affairs Commission to oversee and control the activities of national and international non governmental and civil society organizations.

The Executive Secretary and the Deputy Executive Secretaries will constitute a core strategy group that will provide a more strategic approach to the secretariat's work in support of the Parties based on guidance provided by the COP and the COP MOP.

Member States expressed their appreciation for the work accomplished by the Non Governmental Organizations Section of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs.

ICA provides legal advice to presiding officers and members of constituted bodies and groups, Parties, and the secretariat on administrative, procedural and institutional matters.

The event has been put under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It will be attended by Greek Ministers, representatives of Governmental and Non Governmental Organizations, Parliamentarians, representatives of the Academic world and Institutions, journalists, representatives of the private sector, etc.

The Group, headed by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, included representatives of ministries and of other government departments, donors and United Nations agencies concerned with mine action.

Through its six field coordination offices, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs was an important focal point for United Nations interaction with humanitarian non governmental organizations.

At United Nations Headquarters, the Non Governmental Organizations Section of the Department of Public Information hosted a half day event organized by the NGO Committee on Ageing in cooperation with the Department of Economic and Social Affairs and attended by some 500 people.

Following consultation between the secretariat of the Commission on Human Rights, the Office of Legal Affairs of the United Nations, the Economic and Social Council secretariat and the Non Governmental Organizations Section of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the organization decided to withdraw its written statement (see E C.2 2005 R.3).

On 29 July 2008, the Palace announced that King George Tupou V would relinquish much of his power and would surrender his role in day to day governmental affairs to the Prime Minister.

The capacity of key State institutions, including those in the areas of finance and law enforcement, continued to improve as personnel acquired new skills and experience.

Members of the Committee welcomed the increased cooperation between the Non Governmental Organizations Sections of both the Department of Economic and Social Affairs and the Department of Public Information and expressed their strong support for the increased contribution made by NGOs towards achieving the MDGs.

The programme, Legal affairs, is implemented by the Office of Legal Affairs.

On the Government of the Sudan side, the missions included representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, the Ministry of Justice and the Humanitarian Affairs Commission.

Providing legal advice both written and oral on a wide range of legal issues affecting the operations of the Tribunal, working closely with Government authorities and the Office of Legal Affairs in New York.

A government coordination secretariat has been created to finalize the rules of executive business (a priority) and ensure that the Government transacts business, and coordinates its constituent institutions, efficiently.
