The Timorese Police Reserve Unit has become operational and is improving its capacity.

Currently, formed police units are deployed in Port au Prince (4 units), Les Cayes (1 unit) and Gonaïves (1 unit) to support the national police in static security duties, general operational back up and crowd control.

The Police Unit Leader as well as a policeman have been arrested and are being detained awaiting trial.

His Government took that responsibility very seriously and, to that end, it had significantly strengthened the diplomatic police unit.

The 125 person International Response Unit, which is no longer required now that the Timorese Police Reserve Unit has become operational, will be withdrawn.

EUPM continued assisting in developing a hierarchy of domestic decision making, from the political level down to the local police unit.

The UNMIL Civilian Police component has established an anti trafficking unit designed to build the capacity of local Liberian National Police to investigate, infiltrate and break up child trafficking networks operating in Liberia.

In this connection, a first formed police unit could be deployed to Abidjan within one month of the adoption of the enabling resolution.

MINUSTAH established a Joint Special Investigation Unit, composed of human rights and civilian police officers, which has identified a series of priority cases of alleged human rights violations.

To a certain extent, this lack of confidence in the ability or willingness of the police to provide security has been mitigated through the deployment of the civilian police contingent of AMIS.

As reported in paragraph 10 above, the second meeting of the consultative group, which took place on 26 July, addressed issues related to further development of the Timorese national police, including the Border Patrol Unit.

The latter positions will be filled by police training advisers, who will focus on imparting policing skills to the Border Patrol Unit, particularly in relation to information gathering and analysis, counter terrorism and investigation of border related crimes.

However, the Indonesian Armed Forces cancelled a third meeting with the Border Patrol Unit and indicated that it would not participate in further talks with the Unit until the Timorese police were prepared to share the results of their investigation.
