The Growing Sustainable Business (GSB) initiative for poverty reduction, adopted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) aims to facilitate and increase investment and business activities that have a positive impact on sustainable development and the Millennium Development Goals.

A recent initiative was proposed under the Global Compact umbrella in Johannesburg entitled Growing Sustainable Business in the Least Developed Countries .

Progress in reforming the forestry sector has been slow.

Fuelwood conservation and substitution is of high priority in the African forest sector.

The elimination of economic and social threats to durable peace and sustainable development in Africa is at the very heart of the NEPAD initiative.

Parties in this region proposed 50 per cent of all forest sector projects.

In the context of the GSB initiative, UNDP plays the role of broker by linking private sector abilities and local development priorities through the development of new, cutting edge business models.

These changes in management methods have resulted in changes to ancient woodland habitats, and a loss of ancient woodland to forestry.

In 2012, the UMass Permaculture Initiative won the White House Champions of Change sustainability contest, which declared that they demonstrate how permaculture can feed a growing population in an environmentally sustainable and socially responsible manner .

The Convention Plus initiative was already a success in progress, and the Framework for Durable Solutions held great promise even for protracted refugee situations.

The year also saw expansion of the Growing Sustainable Business initiative, a key programme that takes the findings of the Commission's report and pushes the envelope of innovative strategies at the nexus of markets and development.

At end December 2002, lumber production showed mixed results, while exploitation activities had improved markedly.

Since COP 6, emphasis of interregional cooperation has been on the development of information exchange and joint initiatives in the field of agroforestry.

Action by CPF members has included the National Forest Programme Facility, the work of PROFOR and capacity building.

14.44 During the biennium 2006 2007, there will be an increase in activities related to environmental education and training, including those designed to support the implementation of the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development initiative.

Prior to the launch meeting, subregional workshops on agroforestry had been held in the Gran Chaco, Puna and Hispaniola subregions.

On 2 July, the Congress adopted the Orlando Declaration, highlighting the contribution of agroforestry systems and technologies in the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.

That is a very important initiative.
