4. Convention on Biological Diversity The Convention on Biological Diversity was negotiated by the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee for a Convention on Biological Diversity established by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

We thank Ambassador Bo Kjellén of Sweden, Chairman of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee, the members of the Bureau and the United Nations Secretariat for their diligence and hard work throughout the negotiation process.

In that context, through its active participation in the meetings of the Negotiating Committee and the inter agency meetings, FAO was placing its technical skills in the area of combating desertification and developing arid zones at the disposal of member countries and the secretariat of the International Negotiating Committee.
