Collaboration between the Chemosynthetic Ecosystems Group and the Seamounts Group

Recently, in the international debate on the sustainable management of marine resources and the protection of marine ecosystems, there has been a strong focus on the high seas.

The workshop will be held in collaboration with scientists from the chemosynthetic ecosystems group and the seamounts group of the Census for Marine Life.

In the area of large marine eco systems, attention will be given to the Humboldt Current and the Gulf of Mexico.

The Authority has also set up collaborations with the Chemosynthetic Ecosystems Group (ChEss) and the Seamounts Group (CenSeam).

A new brochure examines the widespread occurrence of marine litter in areas under the Regional Seas Programme and within the 64 large marine ecosystems around the world, so as to promote integrated management based on ecosystem approaches.

These include assessments of marine litter as a land based pollutant and its impact on critical coastal and marine ecosystems.

Such programmes are already being implemented in the LMEs of the Gulf of Mexico, the Guinea Current and the Humboldt Current.

The Icelandic authorities continue to work on protecting vulnerable marine ecosystems within their national jurisdiction.

Callum Roberts, Professor in Marine Conservation Biology, Environment Department, University of York, United Kingdom, explained how marine reserves could benefit fisheries and ecosystem recovery and stability.

Noting that many Pacific Islands Forum nations depend upon the continued existence of sustainable marine ecosystems,

New Zealand continues to believe that action to address the adverse impacts of fishing activities on vulnerable marine ecosystems is necessary and urgent.

As we have said in the past, Pacific Islands Forum members come from a region that has a high concentration of vulnerable marine ecosystems, including coral reefs and underwater seamounts.

Other delegations proposed to call upon States to urgently agree on an open mechanism to cooperate in the protection of vulnerable marine ecosystems.

The representative of the Permanent South Pacific Commission said that its plan of action to protect the marine environment, including vulnerable marine ecosystems, and the Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment and Coastal Area of the South East Pacific and its Protocols provided the basis for action with respect to marine debris.

With regard to the protection of vulnerable marine ecosystems, the European Union would like to draw the Assembly's attention to two key processes set out in these draft resolutions.

The current debate and the draft resolutions before us assert the commitment of the General Assembly to the issues concerning the oceans and the law of the sea in a context marked by the fear of the serious implications for future generations of the deterioration of marine ecosystems and the excessive exploitation of marine biological resources.

Iceland is certainly not the only State that is protecting vulnerable marine ecosystems within its national jurisdiction this is being done by many States all over the world.

(d) The promotion and encouragement of marine scientific research in the Area through, inter alia, an ongoing programme of technical workshops, the dissemination of the results of such research, and collaborations with the Kaplan Project, ChEss and CenSeam

81. Reaffirms the importance it attaches to paragraphs 66 to 69 of its resolution 59 25 concerning the impacts of fishing on vulnerable marine ecosystems

We view the enhanced language in the draft resolution as underscoring the importance to the international community of addressing this issue and safeguarding the biodiversity of these fragile and rare marine ecosystems.

The role of hydrography in the security of navigation, the preservation of human life at sea, and the protection of the environment, including vulnerable marine ecosystems, has too long been unknown by the public at large.

During recent discussions on oceans issues, much attention has been devoted to integrative approaches, including an ecosystem approach to the management of the marine environment.

(c) Request regional fisheries management organizations and arrangements with existing competency to implement spatial and temporal measures to protect vulnerable marine ecosystems to do so as a matter of urgency

In that context, we were satisfied with the outcome of the thorough consultations on the fisheries resolution last year with respect to the impact of fishing on vulnerable marine ecosystems.

Within the class of S field systems, the fields evolve from mechanical fields to electro magnetic fields.

58. Calls upon all States that have not yet done so to become parties to the International Convention on the Control of Harmful Anti fouling Systems on Ships International Maritime Organization, document AFS CONF 26, annex.

Among them, two governance issues straddle the two draft resolutions, to which the European Union attaches particular importance combating illegal, unregulated and unreported (IUU) fishing, and addressing the conservation of vulnerable marine ecosystems.

These are only some of the causes that resulted in the creation of a plan and the start up of a strategic reform and reconstruction of health care in BiH.
