American Samoa

In a note verbale dated 1 March 2005, the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations informed the Secretary General that the Holy See has made scholarships available to 10 inhabitants of American Samoa, two inhabitants of the United States Virgin Islands and three inhabitants of Guam.

3. Decides that the Holy See, in its capacity as Observer State, and Palestine, in its capacity as observer, shall participate in the High level Dialogue

In that context, the Holy See favours the creation of a body that restores peace in countries that have suffered armed conflict.

Participants at the High level Plenary Meeting will include Member States, the Holy See, in its capacity as observer State, and Palestine, in its capacity as observer.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms. Louise Arbour, as well as the observers for the Holy See and Poland made statements.

The Committee then engaged in a dialogue with the Special Rapporteur, in which the delegations of the United Kingdom, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Guatemala and the Holy See took part.

The estimate of 14,400 under this heading relates to the contributions expected in the biennium 2006 2007 from the Holy See, which is currently the only non member State in the category described above.

Rome was captured by the kingdom of Italy after several battles and guerilla like warfare by Papal Zouaves and official troops of the Holy See against the Italian invaders.
