A major strategy document to guide policies and action on sustainable agriculture and rural development is being finalized.

The Council of Ministers also decided to convene in November 1994 a Pan Arab ministerial conference on sustainable agricultural and rural development.

As regards the field of agriculture the focus is on providing economic assessment and policy advice related to the agri food sector unifying agricultural and food statistics harmonizing food standards and exchanging practical experience in the field of sustainable agricultural and rural development.

In recent years, the Vietnamese Government attaches great importance to agricultural and rural development.

(b) Sustainable agricultural development

Promoting measures for revitalizing drylands agricultural sectors based on good local governance for sustainable agricultural farming systems.

In addition to sustainable debt management, urgent action needs to be taken in order to do away with agricultural subsidies, in particular cotton subsidies.

Appropriate agricultural policy incentives can help to ensure sufficient input of resources in marginal regions to allow sustainable agricultural practices, rather than continuing land degradation.
