Urges all parties concerned in the region to cease any recruitment, training and use of child soldiers, welcomes the initial steps taken by the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo to demobilize and reintegrate child soldiers, and urges the Government and all parties to continue their efforts in this regard

There was also concern expressed about how child soldiers were being vaccinated, and more importantly how to prevent them from being recruited in the first place.

13. Notes with concern the tragic plight of children in conflict situations in Africa, particularly the phenomenon of child soldiers, and stresses the need for the protection of children in armed conflicts, post conflict counselling, rehabilitation and education

Some 8,500 former child soldiers, war affected children and young people enrolled in reintegration programmes in Afghanistan.

They urge Governments and civil society to undertake serious disarmament, rehabilitation and reintegration measures for former child soldiers and young combatants.

Special emphasis has been put on demobilizing child soldiers within six months of the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

On the issue of children and armed conflicts, the Government of Japan had continued to contribute emergency funds (US 3.64 million) to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) programme of disarming, demobilizing, reintegrating and rehabilitating child soldiers.

More pressure has to be exerted on parties to conflict in order to make them realize that the costs of using child soldiers outweigh the benefits.

Thirdly and finally, maintaining and enhancing programmes for the demobilization and reintegration of child soldiers are, in our view, of the utmost importance.

However, insurgents are recruiting combatants, including child soldiers, in Liberia, mainly to fight in Côte d'Ivoire and Guinea.

(e) To put an immediate end to the recruitment and use of child soldiers and to extend full cooperation to relevant international organizations in order to ensure the demobilization of child soldiers, their return home and their rehabilitation

In that connection, also noteworthy is the demobilization of thousands of child soldiers in Afghanistan, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Haiti, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Under the second phase, which began in December 2004 and is still ongoing, some 618 child soldiers were demobilized.

Hundreds of thousands of child soldiers are currently serving in armed forces throughout the world.

(f) The recruitment and use of child soldiers by armed forces and groups, including the abduction of children throughout the territory of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in contravention of international human rights standards

The speakers called for effective measures to put an end to the recruitment and use of children in armed conflict situations in violation of applicable international laws and the need to reintegrate child soldiers and to prevent them from becoming a factor in the recurrence of crises.

(j) To implement fully its commitment to cooperate with United Nations agencies and non governmental organizations in ensuring the demobilization, rehabilitation and reintegration of child soldiers

The process of demobilization of child soldiers, begun in 2004, was almost completed, but the Government needed assistance in reintegrating them.

The Armenian militants scalped persons they had killed, cut off their organs, put out the eyes of infants, ripped the abdomens of pregnant women and buried or burned people alive.
