A representative of the Rio Group also actively participated in the expert group meeting to ensure complementarity between the handbook and the compendium being prepared by the Rio Group.

On a proposal by the President, the COP MOP decided to establish a contact group on this item, chaired by Ms. Daniela Stoycheva (Bulgaria), to report back to the COP MOP before the beginning of the high level segment on 7 December.

While reaffirming and refining many of the observations of the Ad Hoc Expert Group, the Guadalajara meeting narrowed down the range of options, and also recognized that the options are not necessarily mutually exclusive.

Noting the outcome of the meeting of the Adelboden Group on Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development in Mountain Regions, which met in Rome from 1 to 3 October 2007,
