The new department has approximately 70 staff.

Since 2004 there are five staff positions in the department.

OWAFD's staff also came from various agencies, such as the Community Development Department and the Department of Public Welfare.

However, the human and financial resources available to the United Nations system and specifically to the staff of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs providing technical assistance to Member States remain severely limited.

The Department of Safety and Security operates its own website as an essential tool for keeping designated officials, United Nations agencies, programmes and funds, and staff at large up to date on security matters.

Health Department

The Department of Peacekeeping Operations proposes that the 100 series appointment be used as the contractual instrument for the employment of staff performing functions that are not, by their nature, temporary or limited in duration, and for which the Department has a continuing need for one year or longer, in line with ST SGB 177.

Ms. Russler (Department of Safety and Security) said that, should the Committee adopt the draft decision, the appointment of senior staff and, hence, the selection of candidates to fill Professional level posts would be delayed and the Department would not be fully operational until 1 January 2006, rather than 1 September 2005 as planned.

The Group noted the progress made by the Department of Safety and Security in filling headquarters posts but was concerned about the delays in recruiting Field Service staff, which should have been the first priority.
