Service Module 2 Investment and technology promotion

28G.23 This subprogramme encompasses the Information Technology Service and the Support Services Service.

The structure of the Information Technology Service Division remains unchanged.

For starters, technology is making even many service jobs tradable, enabling them to be offshored to Asia and other emerging markets. And, eventually, technology will replace manufacturing and service jobs in emerging markets as well.

These cellular systems were based on US Advanced Mobile Phone Service (AMPS) technology, the modified technology being named Total Access Communication System (TACS).

The Information Technology Service of the Division for Management continues to provide substantive information management services for all UNODC information owners.

This platform is the best example of the application of information technology in the service and exercise of the rights of individuals.

This service enables developing countries to get the institutional infrastructure for technology right in order to efficiently translate productive capacity into growth.

The United States General Services Administration provided such services, through its Rocky Mountain Regional Office (Region 8) of the Federal Technology Service.

28F.27 The Information Technology Service and the General Support Section of the Division for Management are responsible for the implementation of this subprogramme.

The Division has redefined the terms of reference of its Information and Communication Technology Service Unit to include responsibilities for quality assurance, continuous improvement and risk management support.

Activities of this three year project also include two expert group meetings, at least eight national workshops and a bimonthly value added technology information service update on biotechnology.

In addition to the technology related services provided under this service module, UNIDO recently established an Emerging Technologies Group (ETG) to oversee the Organization's programme of assistance to client countries in the areas of information and communication technology (ICT), biotechnology and hydrogen energy technologies.

Other initiatives exploring opportunities in emerging sectors such as tourism, mass media, health and education, environmental conservation, the service sector and information and communication technology are also being implemented.

Specifically, the Director is responsible for all staff of the Service, including those in its front office, and in its investment, information technology, operations and risk and compliance areas.

28G.24 The Information Technology Service is responsible for the administration of the communications infrastructure systems, including Internet services, at the United Nations organizations, and operation of the communication systems.
