Coordinated approach to reporting by States parties

A number of Member States have already offered to approach States with less capacity to help them meet their reporting obligations, and the Committee welcomes these initiatives and will help coordinate this effort, e.g., through a regional mentor approach.

One State has suggested a regional mentor approach could help those with less capacity to meet their reporting obligations across a range of Security Council resolutions.

In the new approach, the historical pattern of sessions, reporting lines and other dependencies were studied and the availability of established capacities was taken into account.

Since then the approach has evolved to take into account developments in corporate sustainability reporting as well as development in the field of accounting for social and environmental impact.

In that context, the improved possibilities for the inclusion in reports of information gathered within a federal structure and for clearer comparison between reporting States by the treaty bodies, as well as the particular advantages of a coordinated approach to reporting for developing countries were highlighted.

Most welcomed the suggestion that States parties should adopt a coordinated approach to reporting and be encouraged to establish appropriate coordinating structures to support their reporting under all of the treaties to which they were party, although such structures should not create additional work for States.

The inter committee meeting recommended that all States parties consider adopting a coordinated approach to reporting under all of the treaties to which they are party, and consider the option of establishing appropriate and stable coordinating institutions or mechanisms in order to support coherent, timely, sustained and thorough reporting.

Building upon the OIOS recommendations, the secretariat will develop and test a results based approach to planning, evaluating, and reporting on its activities and use of resources in the 2006 2007 biennium.

The September meeting had decided that the follow up to the recommendations of oversight bodies, including OIOS, should be a standing item on its agenda in order to develop a common approach and ensure harmonized reporting.
