Stakeholder participation. Stakeholder participation in sustainable forest management is an increasingly important feature at the country level.

It has been suggested that the multi stakeholder dialogue of a session be focused on seeking multi stakeholder perspectives on the specific agenda items of that session.

CPF members state that the multi stakeholder dialogue at sessions of the Forum and the participation of civil society in intersessional activities have been beneficial.

To make this happen, collaborative multi stakeholder efforts would be needed.

E. Advocacy, education and outreach efforts the need for multi stakeholder approaches

More space for multi stakeholder dialogue is also needed in the United Nations.

The Global Compact has become an extensive multi stakeholder network with active participation by some 1,300 companies from around the world, United Nations agencies, labour unions, civil society organizations and Governments.

Major groups stress the value of the multi stakeholder dialogue in promoting cooperation and consensus.

It is also recognized that the implementation requires decision making processes that are multi stakeholder based.3

Integrated planning of human settlements development, including water and sanitation, based on multi stakeholder participation is attracting growing interest and adherence as a promising option for addressing the challenges posed by rapid urbanization in the developing world.

Multi stakeholder alliances at a global level are growing and try to address global public concerns (e.g., environmental degradation, AIDS).

These have been integrated and mainstreamed into our national development strategy formulated through a multisectoral and multi stakeholder consultative process.

Pursuant to its resolution 1 1, the Forum holds a multi stakeholder dialogue as a common element of every session.

In order that stakeholder involvement may be enhanced, participation by major groups continues to be strengthened.

At all levels, participation of a broad range of stakeholder groups will be essential in this undertaking.

There is a need for enabling legislation on multi stakeholder processes that sets umbrella goals, leaving the specific implementation to lower levels.

Strategies that would help countries to overcome domestic insecurity and conflict, transform their economies, and, ultimately, meet their potential include strengthening governance institutions and the rule of law, ensuring multi stakeholder participation, and guaranteeing that all citizens have equal access to justice.

In order to integrate major group participation more fully with the general discussion, the multi stakeholder dialogue will be interspersed throughout the two week session and representatives of major groups will present relevant perspectives during the plenary and the high level ministerial segment.

At its first session in 2001, the Forum had noted the value of multi stakeholder dialogues in advancing the work of the Forum.

The present note has been prepared to facilitate the multi stakeholder dialogue at the fifth session of the United Nations Forum on Forests.

7. Calls upon the international community to continue to promote multi stakeholder approaches in addressing the challenges of development in the context of globalization

Voluntary, multi stakeholder partnerships working towards sustainable development goals have proved to be an important complementary outcome of the World Summit on Sustainable Development.

Mr. Sanon said the case study launched a workshop to foster effective stakeholder participation, information sharing and awareness raising.

Countries report a positive trend towards increasing stakeholder participation, stimulated both by the emphasis in the IPF IFF proposals and by more general national policies that promote such participation.

The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) has promoted the economic empowerment of rural women through multi stakeholder dialogues and capacity building.

Most non governmental organizations involved in the international forest policy debate think that multi stakeholder dialogues are inappropriate vehicles through which to channel civil society's views.

Members of the group have also participated in ongoing multi stakeholder consultations on the issue organized by the World Economic Forum as part of the financing for development process.

Setting rules to encourage various stakeholders to play roles that provide the best results is an option that Governments have at their disposal to facilitate productive multi stakeholder processes.
