I am sure that the Second Committee and the Economic and Social Council will continue to carry out that monitoring.

We thank the Committee's Monitoring Team, which has made a critical contribution to the action and the thinking of the Committee.

He therefore urged States parties to present their reports without delay in order to enhance the monitoring function of the Committee.

The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research and the Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programmes organized a workshop on biological monitoring.

The Committee also takes note of suggestions for improvement in the work of the Committee expressed in Member State reports and communicated to the Chairman of the Committee and the Monitoring Team during their visits to selected States.

The Committee recalls that such information is necessary for evaluating the implementation of the Convention and for monitoring policies that affect minorities.

I should also like to report that the Monitoring Team has continued to provide essential support to the work of the Committee.

The Committee is also considering the possibility of collective regional reporting and has asked the Monitoring Team to further examine this option.

The Committee, assisted by the Monitoring Team, has continued to encourage States to submit names for possible inclusion on the Consolidated List.

Furthermore, the Committee has maintained cooperation between experts of the CTC and the Monitoring Group on sanctions against Al Qaeda and the Taliban.

A variant of that proposal involved establishing a subcommittee of the Human Rights Committee that would be specifically tasked with monitoring the protocol. The second option would be to draft a separate treaty that would have its own monitoring body.

The Chairperson of the Human Rights Committee had noted that increasing the number of monitoring mechanisms could lead to problems with consistency of jurisprudence.

The Monitoring Committee, established under the Linas Marcoussis Agreement, and the tripartite Monitoring Group have reviewed the legislation on the Independent Electoral Commission and the nationality laws from the perspective of their conformity with the letter and spirit of the Linas Marcoussis Agreement.
