Pursuant to ILO Convention No. 169, which contains articles dealing with indigenous educational and cultural issues, ILO is carrying out various activities relating in particular to the elimination of child labour.

In this regard, the Committee recommends that States parties ratify the ILO Maternity Protection Convention, 2000 (No. 183).

ILO has consistently promoted dialogue between Governments and representative indigenous organizations, and has explored the possibility of using ILO Convention No. 169 as a framework for peace talks (as was the case in Guatemala in 1996).

The representative of ILO informed the meeting about progress in the development of the consolidated maritime labour convention and a convention and recommendation concerning work in the fishing sector.

In this connection, the Committee recommends that the State party consider ratifying ILO Convention No. 29 on forced or compulsory labour.

This can only be achieved with the full consultation and participation of the peoples concerned, in accordance with ILO Convention No. 169.

The Government ratified the ILO Convention No. 100 by Law No. 80 of 1957 on Equal Pay for Equal Value of Work.

Under the Project to Promote ILO Policy on Indigenous and Tribal Peoples (see paras. 10 16 below) training tools are currently being developed for indigenous peoples on ILO instruments other than Convention No. 169 that are of relevance to them.

Indeed, few countries currently provide comprehensive social protection, as defined by ILO Convention 102 (the instrument establishing internationally agreed minimum social security standards).

These initiatives aim at the promotion of the rights of indigenous and tribal peoples through implementation of the principles of ILO Convention No. 169

In this connection, the Committee recommends that the State party consider ratifying the ILO Convention No. 81 concerning Labour Inspection in Industry and Commerce.

He requested the assistance of the Consultative Process in promoting widespread ratification and implementation of ILO instruments, including the Seafarers' Identity Documents Convention (Revised).

Other information sought by the Committee refers to activities, programmes and policy decisions undertaken by the ILO to promote the implementation of the Convention.

El Salvador has also ratified, among others, the ILO Discrimination (Employment and Occupation), 1958 (Convention No. 111) and the Ministry of Labour will carry out a study with a view to promoting ratification of the Migrant Workers (Supplementary Provisions) Convention, 1975 (Convention No. 143).
