In its resolution 58 4, the General Assembly, in order to raise awareness of corruption and of the role of the United Nations Convention against Corruption in combating and preventing it, decided that 9 December should be designated International Anti Corruption Day.

Burkina Faso's other multilateral and bilateral obligations that play a role in combating corruption, transnational organized crime and terrorism were also reviewed.

2. Each State Party may adopt more strict or severe measures than those provided for by this Convention for preventing and combating corruption.

The obligations of States under the Maputo Convention relate not only to laundering the proceeds of corruption, illicit enrichment and the funding of political parties, but also to cooperation and mutual legal assistance in combating corruption.

Member States could use the event as a platform for effective and increased cooperation in combating transnational organized crime, illicit trafficking, corruption and terrorism.

Egypt was actively combating corruption and money laundering and was working to recover the proceeds of crime and return them to the rightful owners.

In addition, the Global Compact Office launched a worldwide effort to raise awareness and deepen the commitment of participants to combating and eliminating corruption.

The central role of the civil society, including a vibrant media, in combating corruption should not only be recognized and encouraged, it should be intensified.

Commending the work of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in preventing and combating corruption,

The countries of the South must take their own development in hand by defining detailed national strategies that are effective and directed towards good governance and combating corruption.

Society also demands effective mechanisms for combating corruption, which is turning into a serious political problem, precisely because it has widened the gap between the people and the authorities.

Recognizing also existing efforts that complement the work of the United Nations Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Programme in combating corruption, and noting the outcome of the third Global Forum on Fighting Corruption and Safeguarding Integrity, held at Seoul from 28 to 31 May 2003,

IPED works to increase citizen participation in the Bulgarian government, limiting the influence of the mafia in politics, securing a fair electoral process, and combating corruption and abuse of power.

While we are in fact strengthening our institutions for development through good governance, combating corruption and driving private sector growth, by no means should those factors be used as conditionalities.

Several speakers noted that while developed countries needed to increase the volume of ODA, developing countries had to take development into their own hands, especially by combating corruption and instituting good governance.
