H. Role of financial intelligence units

Under section 17B of the FTR Act, all international funds transfer instructions (IFTIs) sent into and out of the country are reported to AUSTRAC.

The FIU became a member of the Egmont Group in July 2003 and is therefore able to exchange information with other members of the group in accordance with the conditions established by the group, for such exchanges.

The UIF is the authority in charge of compiling and analysing information on exceptional, unusual and suspicious operations detected by the intermediaries and, if necessary, sending it to the Public Prosecutor's Office for the appropriate investigations.

UIF is currently holding talks with the Watson Institute of the United States of America, among other institutions, for the design of a course for public and private sector officials, focusing specifically on action to combat terrorism.

FIA's information system will be upgraded as well (through EU PHARE investment project Upgrade of the Technological Environment of the Financial Intelligence Agency ).

The role of a FIU is to analyse Suspicious Transactions Reports filed by financial institutions and other obligated non financial entities and to disseminate that intelligence to appropriate national authorities for investigation or prosecution.
