Will More Integration Save Europe s Social Model?

The use of social dialogue for crisis management should be increased, because trust must be rebuilt.

Supporters of Europe s social model claim that what distinguishes it is the importance placed on social cohesion.

It also needs to speak with one voice on matters of foreign policy in order to play a more important international role in solving major conflicts and shaping a more peaceful and balanced world order. Finally, the EU needs to promote social cohesion while adapting Europe s social model to globalization s challenges.

(b) Implementation through social dialogue and community planning. We ask the Commission at its fourteenth session to take note of trade unions' contribution to dialogue, collective planning and change in both the workplace and community.

To empower social partners to influence the drafting and implementation of poverty reduction strategies through social dialogue.

Related to this is the idea that only a strong EU can save the European social model.

So the first and second parts could be ratified without new negotiations and could form the basis for the new Treaty, so that the Treaty of Nice would still apply and the debate on the European social model would continue.

But this is misleading the European social model is, in fact, part and parcel of the identity of the EU member states more than of the EU per se.

The EU is, at last, beginning to understand that betting its future on services will not be enough to safeguard the European socioeconomic model.

There is nothing more dramatic to be done than to focus on upgrading the EU US strategic dialogue.

Therefore, we ask the fourteenth session of the Commission to evaluate today's patterns of industrial development against standards of social dialogue and democratic governance.

Britain has continued to support EU enlargement, closer links with Turkey, and development in Africa, but it has not launched any creative initiatives to bring other member states along or change the terms of the EU debate.
