The 42 participants in the course will constitute the core of staff officers for AMIS and AU headquarters in the future.

To facilitate this growing level of cooperation between the two organizations, I accepted the AU invitation to establish a full time assistance and liaison cell at the African Union Commission.

The African Union (AU) is committed to the implementation and enforcement of the arms embargo on Somalia, and the Monitoring Group continues to work directly with AU in this regard.

Welcoming further the Vision and Mission of the African Union and the proposals contained in the Strategic Plan of the Commission of the African Union, as adopted at the meeting of the Heads of State and Government of the African Union, held in Addis Ababa from 6 to 8 July 2004,

For its part, Cameroon continues to support the position of the African Union.

Lastly, the selection of African candidates will be made by the African Union.

The United Nations is also continuing its efforts to facilitate African Union efforts to secure fuel supplies for AMIS.

In the meantime, I have undertaken discussions with Chairman Konaré on practical steps that can be taken to strengthen AMIS.

The Council calls on all the parties to cooperate fully with the African Union mission with a view to ensuring its freedom of movement and safety in all areas of Darfur.

In view of the decisions adopted at the African Union and CARICOM summit meetings, we are ready to continue our dialogue with the African Union and CARICOM, as well as the United Nations membership at large.

The international community, and donors to AMIS in particular, must take urgent action to assist the African Union in translating those decisions into concrete results on the ground.

So far, the Peace Facility has supported the African Union leadership in Darfur by providing more than 92 million to the African Union Mission in the Sudan.

In the meantime, the AU Commission and AU troop and police contributing countries and donors will have to proceed diligently with the expansion of AMIS.

Commending the efforts of the African Union, in particular its Chairman, acknowledging the progress made by the African Union in the deployment of an international protection force, police, and military observers, and calling on all member States to contribute generously and urgently to the African Union Mission in Darfur,

With the AU Mission approaching its authorized strength of 6,171 military personnel and 1,560 civilian police, the AU Commission is now focusing on ensuring that AMIS can reach its full operational capability.

The AU Commission continues to expand AMIS through the deployment of additional personnel.

We also appreciate the constant presence of the African Union mission in Darfur.

Collaboration between AMIS and UNMIS continues.

The African Union would also select its own representatives for those permanent seats.

The United Nations is working with the African Union to address this problem.

(b) African Union Conference of National Human Rights Institutions

The Organization of African Unity was transformed into the African Union in 2002.

The African Union is taking an ever more active role in peace and security.
