Ensure environmental sustainability (MDG 7)

My Government recognizes the critical role of environmental issues in the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.

Environmental sustainability should be integrated in the regional cooperation strategies aimed at achieving the MDGs.

This service module addresses the issue of environmental sustainability in accordance with MDG No. 7.

Unlike the other goals, the target corresponding to MDG 7 (Ensure environmental sustainability) is not established in specific quantitative terms or with particular timelines.

The Goals and their implementation have been and continue to be highlighted in UNEP environmental assessments.

(b) To enhance the contribution of forests to the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals, including the Millennium Development Goals, in particular with respect to poverty eradication and environmental sustainability

One of the major development goals is to ensure environmental sustainability, particularly by integrating the principles of sustainable development into country policies and programmes, so as to reverse the loss of environmental resources.

Environmental protection measures, as laid down in goal 7 of the Millennium Development Goals and the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation, should be taken seriously.

Nonetheless, States must take environmental considerations into account when assessing what is necessary and proportionate in the pursuit of legitimate military objectives.

Private sector initiatives to meet corporate environmental goals and develop more environment friendly products as part of strategic marketing initiatives are also drivers of change.

While there is no goal on energy, it is central to meeting the other MDGs, especially those concerning poverty and hunger, universal education, and environmental sustainability.

If those goals are to be achieved in a sustainable manner, recognition that environmental sustainability underpins their achievement must be at the heart of further efforts of the international community.

Human rights, gender equality, sexual and reproductive health and rights, environmental sustainability and education are cross cutting issues contributing to the realization of the Millennium Development Goals.

Section II examines the linkages between sustainable forest management and the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals relating to poverty eradication, health, environmental sustainability, consumption and production patterns and energy.

In the forest sector, decentralization should be seen as a means to accomplish the broad objectives of poverty alleviation, sustainable economic development, and protection of local and global environmental values.

We are likely to miss global targets in the areas of infant and maternal mortality, HIV AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and other infectious diseases and environmental sustainability.

The United Nations Millennium Development Goals set ambitious targets for lowering poverty, improving health and nutrition, expanding education, increasing gender equality, and ensuring environmental sustainability.

It sets out a number of time bound and measurable goals for the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger, universal primary education, gender equality, health, environmental sustainability and a global partnership for development.
