The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) measures to assist the implementation of the UNCCD are carried out with emphasis on the science and education fields of competence.

The IUCN, in collaboration with the GTZ, organized in seven West African countries the project REDUSO (Renforcement de la durabilité sociale des actions de lutte contre la désertification) with the aim of exchanging information on the consideration of social parameters in the implementation of activities to combat desertification.

Currently the UNCCD secretariat is exploring possibilities to associate further personalities for the Year.
