In the report on implementation of United Nations environmental conventions (A 59 197), the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification stressed that desertification contributed to food insecurity, famine and poverty and that it was a serious obstacle to sustainable development.

This supports income generation and diversification activities.

It would seem that the CCD Committee on Science and Technology, and the Dryland Degradation Assessment Project (LADA) coordinated by the FAO could play a major role here, by helping these countries to harmonize their desertification monitoring and assessment methods in line with established standards.

Synergy is considered an important and strategic topic for the UNCCD.

Another submission stressed the need that for the efficiency of the implementation review process to be improved by having the intersessional CRIC meetings centred on those thematic approaches , which are more relevant to that foster a swifter implementation of the UNCCD.

The General Assembly, by designating the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification as focal point of the Year, in conjunction with UNEP, UNDP, IFAD and other relevant bodies of the United Nations, clearly indicated the need for partnership in the implementation of the Convention.
