The pace of discovery of new species, as well as of products that are potentially useful to pharmacology, is higher for marine and microbial life than for terrestrial organisms.34 The pharmaceutical industry has identified a number of uses for these new species and products.

In 1992, the manufacturing sector employed 1,890 persons. 40

In this connection, the cases of the Sindicato de Industrias Mecánicas y Metálicas and the Sindicato de Trabajadores de Empresas de Productos Agroindustriales are representative.

Thirdly, diversification is an appropriate strategy for transforming the economy by promoting agro industries and processing raw materials.

The manufacturing sector consists of handicrafts and a few other very small scale industries, which contribute only about 3 of GDP.

It is no accident that the tertiary sector, the service sector, is growing while the secondary sector (industry) stagnates and the primary sector (agriculture) nearly disappears.

The impact of that cooperation on the Cuban economy, especially in such fields as agro industry, the environment, energy and industrial management, had been palpable.

A number of upstream industries could also be considered as related activities, in so far as they provide agriculture or the agro industries with intermediate inputs (fertilizers, pesticides, seeds, etc.) and capital goods (machinery and installations).

(e) Europe and the NIS The region has a significant potential for developing the agro industrial sector.

One of the major industries on Guam, and the third most important economic sector (after tourism and the public sector), is construction.

The manufacturing sector can make a significant contribution to the task of post war reconstruction in Afghanistan.

The industrial sector accounted for about a third of output, the major industries being metallurgy, agricultural and other machinery, food processing (including sugar refining), electronics and textiles.

Among industrial activities, the manufacturing sector contributes to the gross value added of the secondary sector with 64 of the total, while the building sector contributes 24 .

In turn, this can spur sustainable non farm employment growth in services, agro processing, and small scale manufacturing.

The country has also developed a successful apparel assembly industry and one of the largest electronics assembly industries in the Caribbean.

The policy of converting military industries to civilian use and employing the armed forces in the reconstruction sector has been vigorously pursued.

Initially, agro based industry and food processing will be among the targeted sectors or areas of focus under this initiative.
