With particular regard to Afghanistan, mercenaries fell into several categories, including those working for private companies, those in the pay of warlords, and those involved in drug trafficking in the highly lucrative illegal poppy cultivation market.

As outlined in the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime report, there has been a significant drop in poppy cultivation levels in 2005 (down from 131,000 hectares in 2004 to 104,000 hectares this year a fall of 21 per cent).
