Strengthening the non proliferation regime

The NPT rests on three pillars non proliferation, disarmament and peaceful nuclear cooperation.

The Non Aligned Movement (NAM) was not in favour of adding non proliferation .

However, it neglects the fact that any greater reward for non membership in the NPT or further disruption of the balance between rights and obligations of NPT members under the non proliferation regime will lead to its disintegration rather than the intended strengthening.

Commitment to the three non nuclear principles

We are also a party to the NPT.

As I said, the United States representative has agreed to remove non proliferation and it appears that he has promised us that he is prepared to remove reference to non proliferation .

Thirdly, the existing non proliferation regime should be strengthened and improved in the light of the overall non proliferation situation and global economic, scientific and technological development.

We welcome the mobilization of international efforts to combat proliferation.

Let me use the example of the three pillars of the Non Proliferation Treaty.

We are party to the NPT and the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.

The CD and the NPT regime are separate entities, with respective roles to play.
