The global statistical system consists both of national statistical agencies and of international organizations active in the field of statistics.

The Inter Agency and Expert Group on Millennium Development Goal Indicators coordinates the efforts of United Nations entities and national statistical services, as well as regional and international statistical bodies from outside the United Nations system.

As part of the process of implementing the strategy paper HDRO initiated a more direct contact with national statistical offices and other government agencies.

(f) Poverty, power and decision making and human rights. In many countries, mainstream statistical agencies and programmes do not routinely collect, compile and disseminate gender statistics under such topics as poverty, power and decision making and human rights.

It was concluded that national statistical offices should cooperate with other national agencies, if necessary, to develop a viable programme for distributive trade index numbers and volume measurement.

Furthermore, improvements are needed to the modalities that the international agencies use to consult with national statistical systems to verify estimated figures.

Statistical agencies have also started the activities on collecting some new data, which have not been collected so far, which will be segregated by gender, through the initiative and support by Gender Centers.

Our third concern is that the tables do not distinguish between indicators based on surveys conducted by national statistical offices (perhaps with funding assistance) or those conducted by international agencies.

The Statistics Division and OECD would like to acknowledge the significance of the cooperation with other international organizations members of the inter agency Task Force on International Merchandise Trade Statistics, to ensure the successful completion of this project.

Given the significance of the statistical work of HDRO and the challenge of ensuring that the rigorous statistical work in the HDR meets the highest professional standards, every year one informal thematic consultation has been devoted to discussing statistical issues.
