Education and training are needed for many sectors of society and the general public in order to raise awareness about everyone's responsibility to prevent marine pollution.

We have recently amended our Merchants' Shipping Act, with a view to reducing marine pollution from marine transport activities and dumping.

The maritime security measures aim towards establishing a security conscious culture amongst seafarers, ship owners, ship operators, maritime sector services providers and port facility operators, users and service providers and focus on enhancing awareness and vigilance.

During the plenary and panel discussions, many delegations pointed to inadequate waste management, deficiencies in the implementation of existing standards and lack of awareness of the issue as the main reasons for the increase in marine debris.

The project was completed in early 2004 and provided an analysis of the current international regulations on the security of maritime transport, and their effectiveness in preventing maritime terrorism. The results of this research project were published in May 2004.

Particular attention is given to developments in Latin American trade and maritime transport in the 2005 edition of the Review of Maritime Transport.
