The precautionary principle and the ecosystem approach are fundamental to the conservation and management of fishing resources.

The principle that international cooperation is required to protect fishery resources, which are dwindling everywhere, was adopted at the 2011 CCAMLR meeting.

Fiji has one of the most developed economies in the Pacific due to an abundance of forest, mineral, and fish resources.

Harvesting of marine fish resources in India takes place at three levels, namely, subsistence fishing, small scale fishing and industrial fishing.

Lastly, a Department for International Development sponsored report had been commissioned to establish the potential of Pitcairn's fish and mineral resources within its exclusive economic zone.

The 1995 Fish Stocks Agreement is an essential contribution to the law of the sea as regards the management of straddling and highly migratory fish stocks.

Through the Agreement, States are obliged to cooperate in the management of straddling and highly migratory fish stocks.

Its signing and entry into force have had a significant impact on the conservation and management of fishing resources on the high seas and also on international cooperation in the fishing industry.

The Review Conference of the 1995 United Nations Fish Stocks Agreement will be held next year to evaluate the effectiveness of the Agreement in the conservation and management of straddling fish stocks and highly migratory fish stocks.

The United Nations Fish Stocks Agreement is of paramount importance, as it strengthens considerably the framework for the conservation and management of straddling fish stocks and highly migratory fish stocks by regional fisheries management organizations.

As for aquatic fauna, fish varieties are found in abundance.

We strongly believe that all States should apply effective measures for the conservation, management and exploitation of fish stocks in order to protect living marine resources and preserve the marine environment.

We welcome the review of the United Nations Fish Stocks Agreement.

Noting the obligation of all States, pursuant to the provisions of the Convention, to cooperate in the conservation and management of straddling fish stocks and highly migratory fish stocks,

Fisheries management should promote the maintenance of the quality, diversity and availability of fishery resources in sufficient quantities for present and future generations in the context of food security, poverty alleviation and sustainable development.

The straddling fish stocks Agreement also makes that mechanism applicable to disputes concerning subregional, regional or global fisheries agreements relating to straddling or highly migratory fish stocks.

New Zealand is a strong supporter of the United Nations Fish Stocks Agreement and urges wide participation in next year's review conference to assess the effectiveness of the Agreement in securing the conservation and management of straddling fish stocks and highly migratory fish stocks.

We seek to maximize returns from our fisheries resources and to this end endorse the report on the work of the United Nations Open ended Informal Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea at its sixth meeting.

Noting the importance of the wide application of the precautionary approach to the conservation, management and exploitation of straddling fish stocks and highly migratory fish stocks, in accordance with the Agreement,

Nigeria considers the forthcoming May 2006 review conference of the Fish Stocks Agreement to be of great importance for our efforts to manage fishery stocks.

With respect to the problem of stock management and fishing, we would like to emphasize the need to introduce stricter measures to limit the level of exploitation of most stocks.

28. Also requests the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations to revise its global fisheries statistics database to provide information on straddling fish stocks, highly migratory fish stocks and discrete high seas fish stocks on the basis of where the catch is taken

Fishing is conducted along 300 km of shoreline, and women are heavily engaged in this activity, thanks to the combined efforts of the Ministry of Social Affairs and the Promotion Women and Childhood and the oversight department.

Fishery resources are over exploited animal husbandry suffers a similar lack of rigorous management and the country spends a fortune buying the meat and milk that it could easily produce for itself if farmers had the proper incentives.

As a geographically disadvantaged country bordering a sea which is poor in living resources and suffering from the depletion of fish stocks from its exclusive economic zone, Ukraine places special emphasis on the problem of illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing.

Some Parties indicated a potential for reduction of fishery resources due to ENSO events (e.g. Peru), and others expressed the need to better understand the role of ocean up welling in relation to tuna migration (e.g. Maldives and Peru).
