Most of the aquatic life of the bay is concentrated near that region.

From the 10th century onwards, Arab maritime trade in the region brought increasing Islamic cultural and religious influences.

The coastline of the ROPME Sea Area is also being used as a repository for large quantities of industrial, commercial and residential trash and other solid waste.

Upon the arrival of the MTF to the region (after the 2006 Lebanon War), the Lebanese Navy began jointly working with the navy in lead, which at the time was the Italian Navy, in order to insure a successful outcome to the assigned peace operation.

The second important area was marine biological investigations, although also geological, biological and other surveys were conducted.

It is an agreement that seeks to coordinate the efforts of all countries of the Gulf region for the protection and conservation of marine resources.

The Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources annually reviews the issue of marine debris and has implemented a suite of measures to monitor and evaluate the impact of anthropogenic debris and waste on marine living resources in the Convention Area.

The negative impact of abandoned fishing nets, especially gill nets on coral reefs, is tremendous and has been recorded in the region (State of the Marine Environment Report, 2003).

It is our hope that the States of our region will take advantage of that mechanism created to assist the region's coastal States in preparing for maritime delimitation negotiations in accordance with the provisions of the Convention.

The International Seabed Authority can and is supposed to regulate mining activities in the Area in such a way that any negative effects on the marine environment are minimized or avoided.

XI. Marine environment, marine resources and sustainable development

Navy

There is growing awareness in the region of the impact of land based sources of marine pollution, which is estimated to be responsible for about 80 per cent of all pollution entering the oceans.

The navy did not sport the royal titles common with other European navies like the British Royal Navy.

They underlined that it was necessary to consider the specific needs of rare and vulnerable marine ecosystems and habitats, as well as marine species, such as sea turtles, sharks and sea birds.

The largest unit size may be the whole Navy or Admiralty.

These operate under the auspices of the Royal Netherlands Navy and Marines.

We must strike a balance between marine resources exploitation and the conservation of the marine environment.

The naval assets of the United States, in addition to those of Japan, would find it difficult to enter the entire area, though the majority of the two China seas is international water.

In the context of strengthening the safety of navigation and maritime security in the area, we further commend the assistance of the IMO in facilitating the Marine Electronic Highway project for the Straits of Malacca and Singapore.

It is important that the Authority, while examining the reports submitted by contractors, continue the elaboration of rules, regulations and procedures to ensure the effective protection of the marine environment and the conservation of the natural resources of the Area.

Ecuador was selected to participate as the pilot country in the region in the UNODC Global Container Control Programme aimed at reducing drug trafficking using containers in major seaports.
