Corporate social responsibility for development by TNCs in Africa, which entailed maximizing TNCs for the economic and social development of host States, was imperative.

The wave of large scale cross border acquisitions by leading SINTNCs after 1995 marked a significant development in the internationalization of Singaporean firms (table 4).

Another issue that was raised concerned the effects of TNC operations on the local market structure and the need to safeguard against the crowding out of local companies, products and customs.

It also indicated the increasing preference of leading SINTNCs to grow through acquisitions rather than new subsidiaries abroad.

In the interaction of TNCs with other players, the main question is how developing countries can get more actively involved in the process of global knowledge generation and diffusion by leveraging the activities of TNCs in a way that complements domestic efforts.

For instance, TNCs from developing countries may be less dynamic in the development of advanced technologies.

Linkages between TNCs and SMEs would be important for quick rehabilitation.

Some leading TNCs from different sectors have therefore made a commitment to make CR a strategic concern in their worldwide operations.
