Pollution caused by discharge of solid wastes and litter into the sea is a significant cause of degradation of both the land and marine coastal fringe in the Mediterranean.

As previously noted by the Panel, there is evidence that contamination from the oil well fires in Kuwait reached some parts of Iran.

Syria states that three photographs, taken in 1965, 1992 and 2004 respectively, show degradation which it attributes to pollution resulting from the invasion and occupation.

According to Iran, the purpose of the claim is to address the impacts of air pollution resulting from the oil well fires in Kuwait on its archaeological sites and objects.

It was noted that although discharge of plastics at sea was prohibited under Annex V to MARPOL 73 78, in some parts of the world the levels of marine debris had been reported to be increasing.

The Republic of Korea is also continuing to implement measures to protect the marine environment by preventing or reducing pollution from vessels and land based sources.

Further, Iran has not provided the information necessary to distinguish the impacts of pollution from the oil well fires from the impacts of other factors that normally affect livestock and poultry populations, such as disease.

In the view of the Panel, the estimated magnitude of oil contamination (4.7 square kilometres) is also consistent with current observations of invasion related shoreline contamination (0.8 square kilometres) identified in Kuwait's monitoring and assessment studies, taking into account likely reductions in the extent of contamination during the intervening years.

Contamination from toxic military waste, including depleted uranium, was a serious problem in Vieques and the draft resolution should require that the United States Government should fully cover the decontamination costs.
