The incumbent would also assist the General Service staff of the Space Applications Section.

2. All States should contribute to the Programme on Space Applications in accordance with their space capabilities and their participation in the exploration and utilization of Outer Space.

As we all know, priorities in space have gradually evolved to their current emphasis on practical applications of space technology and greater international cooperation.

The second area to be identified was the promotion of greater exchange of actual experiences in space applications.

At the commencement of the deliberations on this item, the Expert on Space Applications briefed the Committee on the overall strategy for the implementation of the United Nations Programme on Space Applications.

The staff of the Programme on Space Applications and the entire Office have worked hard to ensure the effective and efficient organization of these activities, and I would particularly like to acknowledge the work done by Mr. Abiodun, the Expert on Space Applications, in organizing and coordinating these activities.

(c) Legal issues related to new developments in space applications navigation, remote sensing and geographical information systems.

The Committee agreed that a symposium on space and forests should be held during the forty ninth session of the Committee.

He will provide the Committee with a more detailed look at the activities of the Programme on Space Applications later this week.

It is therefore, in our view, all the more important to provide the Space Applications Programme with additional financial resources.

We call on other States to follow suit so as to enable the Space Applications Programme to cope with the numerous tasks ahead of it.

I would like to highlight especially in this regard the continuing participation of our National Institute for Space Research (INPE) in the Programme on Space Applications, through the offer of training fellowships in various areas relating to space activities.

In Bulgaria apos s view, the Programme on Space Applications, whose importance had been clearly demonstrated in practice, should continue to focus on long term, task oriented education in space technology, as well as on specific applications.

The Office for Outer Space Affairs and, in particular, the Expert on Space Applications and her staff will carry out the activities described in the present report.

Some delegations expressed their support for the efforts of Unidroit to establish a legal instrument to facilitate private financial space activities to the benefit of commercial, as well as public, space applications.

The Committee noted with satisfaction that the Programme on Space Applications was supporting UNESCO in its space education outreach activities.

(ii) Means and mechanisms for strengthening inter agency cooperation and increasing the use of space applications and services within and among entities of the United Nations system

It would be transmitting to the Commission's next session a document outlining how space applications could contribute to the Commission's consideration of thematic clusters.

It participated in the work of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and in the United Nations Programme on Space Applications, as well as in training and fellowship programmes.

Two other reports will be prepared for the Ministerial level meeting on launching the regional space applications programme (1994) and for the ministerial level conference on environment and development (1995).

These collections are published annually, and we hope they help improve the international exchange of information concerning space applications for developing countries.

The Romanian Government supports the proposals of the United Nations Expert on Space Applications regarding the creation of regional centres for science and technology education.

Next September, the Agency will participate in the Ministerial Meeting in Beijing for the development of space applications in Asia and the Pacific.

At the outset of the deliberations of the Committee on this item, the Expert on Space Applications reviewed the activities carried out and planned under the United Nations Programme on Space Applications during the period 1993 1995.

The first, on space applications for forest resource management, was prepared by Mr. Christian Hoffmann and is contained in document A AC.105 563.

The representatives of ASE, COSPAR, ESA, IAF and ILA, as well as the Expert on Space Applications of the Office for Outer Space Affairs, also made statements (see A AC.105 PV.395 398).

The Working Group of the Whole had before it the report of the Expert on Space Applications (A AC.105 840) and noted that the Expert had supplemented her report by a statement.

An increase in technical advisory services in the field of space applications could be an important contribution to the implementation of the recommendations of Agenda 21.

The Committee expressed its appreciation to the Expert on Space Applications for the effective manner in which he had implemented the Programme within the limited funds at his disposal.

The recent symposium on quot Space Applications for Disaster Prevention, Warning, Mitigation and Relief quot proved very successful.

3. Pilot applications projects An important means for promoting the use of space technology for environmental and other applications is pilot projects that develop and demonstrate methods for operational use of space data for practical environmental and developmental purposes.

The Workshop was part of the United Nations Programme on Space Applications for 1992, as proposed by the Expert on Space Applications and recommended by the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space.

The training courses, workshops and seminars have stressed the applications of space technologies for development and have included applications for environmental management.
