Fiji welcomes the draft convention on the protection and promotion of the diversity of cultural expression.

The Committee welcomes the ratification of the Hague Convention No. 33 on the Protection of Children and Cooperation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption.

In this regard, the Committee recommends that States parties ratify the ILO Maternity Protection Convention, 2000 (No. 183).

The Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict is an international treaty that requires its signatories to protect cultural property in war.

While the 1994 Convention afforded significant protections, it needed to be reinforced in an international context characterized by heretofore unknown forms of violence.

The Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage is a treaty that was adopted on 2 November 2001 by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

Argentina placed high priority on the progress of the negotiations within the Ad Hoc Committee on a Comprehensive and Integral International Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights and Dignity of Persons with Disabilities.

This programme is implemented according to Article 4, paragraph 5, law 1302 82, by which the International Labour Convention 103 on Maternity Protection (1952) was ratified.

Revision of the 1994 Convention to broaden its scope of application fell into the procedural framework of article 40 of the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties, but was not compatible with current or future United Nations operations, nor did it take into account the urgency of enhancing staff protection.

In these discussions and on the matter of child protection and the human rights of children, the independent expert noted the importance of calling on the Transitional Federal Parliament to sign and ratify the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) recognized that the protection and promotion of those rights began at home and therefore the institution of the family should be strengthened at the national and international levels.

In that context, I welcome the adoption of the Convention on the Protection of the Diversity of Cultural Contents and Artistic Expressions on 17 October by Commission IV of the 33rd UNESCO General Conference.

Indeed, few countries currently provide comprehensive social protection, as defined by ILO Convention 102 (the instrument establishing internationally agreed minimum social security standards).

He stressed the need to safeguard the family and support international initiatives aimed at improving the situation of families and expressed support for the work of the Ad Hoc Committee responsible for drafting a convention on the rights of persons with disabilities.

Under article 145 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, the Authority has a role in ensuring the protection and preservation of the marine environment from harmful effects that may arise from activities in the Area.

Venezuela is a contracting party to agreements such as the Convention for the Protection and Development of the Marine Environment of the Wider Caribbean Region and its Protocol concerning Specially Protected Areas and Wildlife, the negotiations on which Venezuela participated from the start.

The Law on Environmental Protection, the Law on Water Protection, the Law on Air Protection, the Law on Nature Protection, and the Law on Forests and Law on Waters, which regulate environment protection, will not be easy to implement, without international institutions' support.

In 2006, the UN formally agreed the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities to protect and enhance the rights and opportunities of disabled people, including those with psychosocial disabilities.

The United Nations Convention against Corruption (General Assembly resolution 58 4, annex) follows the trend of containing strong treaty provisions on victims (see article 32, entitled Protection of witnesses, experts and victims ).
