Recognizing the importance of WFP's enhanced effectiveness in emergency preparedness, a new division Analysis, Assessment and Preparedness (ODA) was formed, in which the Emergency Preparedness and Response Unit, the Vulnerability Assessment and Mapping (VAM) Unit and the Needs Assessment Unit coordinate their activities.

Notwithstanding some worthwhile gains in the past decade, much needs to be done to reach a satisfactory level of preparedness.

C. Regional disaster response preparedness activities

We are fully aware that preparedness is necessary.

During 2004, emergency preparedness activities in the field intensified through increased coordination among emergency preparedness officers and focal points at the regional bureau level.

This aspect of preparedness typically receives far less attention.

Regional organizations play an important role in disaster preparedness.

There are two distinct and crucial components of disaster preparedness.

The continued lack of adequate funding for preparedness is troubling.

Preparedness requires strategic thinking, a futuristic mindset and anticipatory skills.

Short term needs associated with the disengagement plan are likely to include the pre positioning of supplies, food commodities and preparedness of emergency services, in anticipation of potential political or security contingencies during and immediately after Israeli withdrawal.

UNICEF is updating the Supply Division emergency preparedness and response plan.

UNICEF will support national efforts for preparedness planning for WASH as part of its commitment to develop preparedness plans in all the countries in which it works (see Section E).
