The network launch meeting was closely linked with preparations for the International Conference on Renewable Energies held in June 2004.

Within the framework of bilateral cooperation, there is one country which reports significant support in the area of renewable energies.

Efforts to preserve Africa s natural resources and to exploit the vast potential of the sub continent s renewable energies are not free.

However, many of the country reports indicate considerable potential for renewable energies, though they have yet to be exploited in an optimum way.

11. Welcomes the initiative by the Government of Germany to host the International Conference for Renewable Energies, in Bonn, from 1 to 4 June 2004

Renewable energies like solar and wind are already competitive with fossil fuels in many parts of the world, and they can be scaled up rapidly.

The launching meeting of the network was closely linked with the preparations of the International Conference on Renewable Energies that took place in June 2004.

The question of energy is little dealt with in the organizations' reports, although it is mentioned in a few, especially with regard to renewable energies.

The International Action Programme from the 2004 International Conference for Renewable Energies (Bonn, Germany) contains ambitious national targets for the expansion of renewable energy in more than 20 countries, including many initiatives for increased cooperation with developing countries.

Such frameworks are essential to realizing the potentials for renewable energy technologies in an effective and efficient manner, to creating favourable conditions for public and private investments in renewable energies, and to extending modern energy services to populations currently without access.

The substantive focus of the UNCCD input to the Conference on Renewable Energies derived largely from the deliberations in the network launch meeting and the ministerial meeting.

Renewable energies can help to multiply and diversify income generating activities thanks to providing decentralized energy supplies which current rural electrification programmes are unable to develop significantly.

(b) The International Action Programme consists of almost 200 voluntary commitments and actions which reflect new and unprecedented evidence of the international community's dedication to renewable energies.

Renewable energies include biomass for fuel (wood and straw), biogas, biofuel (bioethanol and biodiesel), electricity cogenerated from sugar cane, solar energy, wind energy, thermal hydroelectricity, and fuel cells.

The reports emphasize achievements in the promotion of renewable energies, such as the development of photovoltaic systems and alternatives to oil based fuels, as well as improved stoves, all of which help to reduce over consumption of woody fuels.

When the crisis deepened a year ago, Barack Obama introduced into the presidential campaign the theme of a green recovery, based on a surge of investment in renewable energies, new electric vehicles, environmentally efficient green buildings, and ecologically sound agriculture.

China, which channeled around one third of its stimulus package into environmental sectors, has seen its GDP rise sharply, and employment in renewable energies such as solar has climbed to more than 1.5 million, with 300,000 workers added in 2009 alone.
