The international community has responded positively and strongly with an unprecedented global humanitarian emergency relief effort.

To date, the Australian public has contributed some 190 million Australian dollars to the relief and rebuilding effort.

The Task Force assisted during the recent Indian Ocean tsunami disaster relief and rehabilitation effort by providing imagery analyses.

I thank the United Nations and the international community for the generous contributions to the relief effort in the south eastern Gulf States.

Every effort was made to provide appropriate relief in such cases, notably through financial compensation, over and above any recourse to the courts.

Air Force Pave Hawks from the Pacific theater also took part in a massive humanitarian relief effort in early 2005 in Sri Lanka to help victims of the tsunami.

While the overall economic outlook for the Sudan has improved somewhat, insecurity in southern Sudan and Darfur threatens to undermine the international effort to help move those areas from relief to recovery.

As the response to the tsunami relief effort demonstrated, we can do a better job at the United Nations in helping to channel the enormous generosity of the private sector amid global crises.

In an effort to facilitate a more effective international response to the protection and assistance needs of internally displaced persons, in July 2004 the Emergency Relief Coordinator established the Inter Agency Internal Displacement Division within OCHA.

The contribution of the Government has been exceeded by the generosity of the Guyanese people, who facilitated by private sector and social organizations within our country have to date mobilized more than 100,000 for the relief effort.
