During the reporting period, our NGO representatives have also closely followed CEDAW proceedings, the Ukrainian (and other) state government reports and NGO shadow reports.

Four NGO surveys were developed, including a NGO survey on Poverty Eradication and the MDGs with WFUNA, an NGO survey on MDGs conducted by the NGO Section, a survey on MDGs, ICT and Information Society conducted with ATM (UN NGO IRENE Africa Coordinator), and the Annual WFUNA People Surveys on MDGs.

The representative also thanked the UN NGO IRENE NGO Section for support with their recent projects.

In April 2003 the then Hon Prime Minister Edward Natapei Nipake appointed a 13 member CEDAW Committee including five representatives from the NGO sector responsible for overseeing the preparation of the Report.

Defenders from non governmental organizations, such as the Greek Council for Refugees, provided services free of charge. NGO representatives also participated in the work of the Appeals Board which reviewed asylum applications.

Volunteer representatives in Vienna, Geneva and New York continued to participate at various meetings of the United Nations (UN) and were involved in organizing networking and other events of the international NGO community.

The rapid expansion of the United Nations NGO Informal Regional Network (UN NGO IRENE) had reinforced this partnership.

At the 15th meeting, on 27 April 2005, the Committee met with representatives of several non governmental organizations (NGOs), including some of the members of the International NGO Platform on the Migrant Workers' Convention.

In Southern Darfur, there are continued reports of threats by representatives of the Humanitarian Action Committee against NGO run clinics to coerce them to release confidential medical information regarding survivors of gender based violence.

A Kenyan initiative launched in February 2005 sought to standardize reporting on and investigation into cases of abuse or exploitation by training government officials, NGO and refugee representatives in interview techniques and complaint investigation.

He commended the fact that the Commission allowed NGO representatives to participate in the drafting of periodic reports to treaty bodies, and hoped that transparency in Tajikistan's human rights protection system would continue to increase.

Several NGO representatives highlighted certain thematic areas which they considered required further attention by treaty bodies, such as violations relating to sexual orientation and gender identity, and the impact of trade policies on the enjoyment of human rights.
