The embargo prevented Cuba's cardiology programme from obtaining consumables used in interventional cardiology procedures directly from the manufacturers. This represented an additional cost of 66,275 during the year.

We have taken care of over 1,000 indigent patients that could have died, including four free pacemakers in patients with complete heart block. For those that understand cardiology, complete heart block means certain death.

Those diseases remain serious challenges to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. My Government, through an act of Parliament, has established the National HIV AIDS STI TB Council to coordinate all interventional efforts.
