These discussions include joint initiatives on maritime security, counterterrorism, weapons proliferation, disaster prevention and management, and energy security.

GFDRR helps developing countries fund development projects and programs that enhance local capacities for disaster prevention and emergency preparedness.

ASEAN was continuing its efforts to promote the use of space technology for disaster detection, prevention, relief and rehabilitation.

It was now quite apparent that humanity had to stand resolute and united, redoubling its efforts towards disaster prevention and preparedness.

We recognize as well that a culture of disaster prevention and resilience, and associated pre disaster strategies, which are sound investments, must be fostered at all levels, ranging from the individual to international levels.

Simultaneous action on a longer term strategy should be considered and should cover the broad picture of disaster prevention management and recovery.

The Puebla Panama Plan included a natural disaster prevention and mitigation initiative, which incorporated risk management considerations in projects in all sectors.

The World Congress on Disaster Prevention, which opened in Kobe, Japan, earlier today, is an excellent opportunity to pursue this issue in more concrete terms.

Mr. Sardenberg (Brazil) (spoke in Spanish) Brazil welcomes the convening of this meeting of the General Assembly on the strengthening of disaster relief assistance and rehabilitation, reconstruction and prevention activities following the disaster caused by the tsunami in the Indian Ocean.

Urges the international community to render assistance for setting up national, sub regional, regional and international disaster prevention, preparedness and management mechanisms, including early warning systems.

The World Conference on Disaster Reduction, held in Kobe (Hyogo, Japan) from 18 to 22 January 2005, represents a landmark in worldwide understanding of the need to implement a disaster reduction agenda in a comprehensive manner, covering prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery.

The Seventh Meeting will be held in Bangkok on the occasion of the Eleventh Congress and will focus on corruption prevention and control in disaster emergency relief.

Switzerland also hopes that the Kobe Conference will promote the strengthening of the relevant structures in the context of the United Nations international strategy for disaster prevention.

At the summit, the three countries issued a joint statement outlining cooperation on a wide range of issues, including nuclear safety, disaster prevention, economic growth, and the environment.
