Programme Component F.1.1 Emerging Technologies

Innovative strategies are needed to combine the benefits of existing technologies along with the potential growth enabled from new emerging technologies.

I characterized this emerging technology in an aphorism, as it's described, which really talks about what I've experienced, and I'm sure what other people may have experienced in emerging technologies.

Emerging countries tend to benefit from imported technologies in the early stages of economic takeoff, but their growth rates generally slow as they reach higher levels of development.

With so many international problems today, diplomacy does need to combine the old fashioned statecraft of the twentieth century with the new tools that budding technologies have provided.

While expensive, such an initiative would help give companies and banks the surety they need to invest the capital that these emerging technologies require.

Stressing various uncertainties, he suggested that investments in these technologies may begin with present day needs that address climate variability concerns and are further justified by consideration of climate change.

There was therefore a need to renew existing technologies.

The components covered by this Programme thus comprise F.1.1 Emerging Technologies F.1.2 Human Security Post Crisis Rehabilitation and F.1.3 Civil Society Organizations.

Programme F.1 seeks to promote and advance emerging technologies in industrial enterprises of Member States, to harness and co opt the services of civil society organizations in support of UNIDO's work and to respond to the needs of industrial reconstruction in post crisis societies.

Well, I'll tell you what. Green technologies going green is bigger than the Internet.

(b) New technologies and development

With so many international problems today, diplomacy does need to combine the old fashioned statecraft of the twentieth century with the new tools that budding technologies have provided. But tools alone cannot solve or build anything.

Due to the emerging new military concepts and theories such as control of space and occupation of space as well as the research and development of space weapons programs, the growing benefits derived by communities worldwide from space technologies would be harmed.

The potential for illicit use of such technologies has been specifically mentioned in scientific literature and highlights the need to monitor technological developments, in respect of emerging processes and related equipment, with potential use in chemical and biological weapons programmes.

Then there is a set of questions concerning the impact of new technologies.

Existing technologies provide lower risk, lower cost opportunities for new businesses to gain footholds by applying such technologies to address specific local needs.

But I'm here to tell you that technologies are more malleable than that.

Delegates were reminded that the SBI and the SBSTA would consider different aspects of item 4 (e)(i).

The current status of these different technologies varies considerably.

Most of the technologies in the case studies will require community participation for their sustainability.

The technologies that can really make a difference quickly and at lower cost are scrubbers that clean smokestack emissions, catalytic converters that reduce tailpipe emissions, and many others.

Some technologies are already mature and economically competitive, while others need only minor additional development steps to become ready for the market.

In principle, it does not seem reasonable to consider any technology as intrinsically bad. Rather, it should be recognized that it is the use that can be made of them that could have negative connotations.

Although extensive discussion has been placed on developing capabilities in cutting edge technologies, policy makers must not overlook the importance of existing technologies in achieving development objectives.

E. Making effective use of existing technologies, especially ICTs and biotechnologies

The exhibition on environmentally sound technologies EST Showcase , which will be held in conjunction with the Council Forum, will also hold its opening on the evening of 6 February 2006.

And so, already small amounts of technology were transforming the world.
