The peace support operation would deploy its military component to monitor and verify the Ceasefire Agreement and to support the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

The 10,000 strong peacekeeping force authorized by the Council will assist the parties to the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in implementing that historic peace accord.

In the Sudan, the hope engendered by the Comprehensive Peace Agreement for the South must be fulfilled.

We welcome the recent signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in the Sudan, which must now be fully implemented.

All parties should be aware that this is the first test case for the sustainability of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

It is of the utmost importance that all the parties be determined to implement the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in good faith.

Vice President Taha stressed that the Comprehensive Peace Agreement addressed all aspects of the situation for the whole Sudan.

The Government of the Sudan is committed to a final settlement on the basis of the following principles contained in the comprehensive peace agreement.

It started with the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement between the north and south in Nairobi on 9 January.

They can achieve it by establishing without delay the mechanisms that have been agreed upon in the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

The Government's National Assembly also unanimously ratified the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, on 1 February 2005.

Clearly, the Comprehensive Peace Agreement presents many challenges and opportunities for the Sudan, the region, Africa and the world at large.

And we believe that we will achieve that goal if we implement the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and if we work in partnership as Sudanese.

(a) To support the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, to support the African Union Mission in the Sudan and United Nations Mission in the Sudan

In this regard, the peace support operation, whose tasks and functions would derive principally from the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, will collaborate closely with the United Nations agencies, funds and programmes in pursuit of the overall objective of the United Nations.

(vi) To assist the parties to the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, in addressing the need for a national inclusive approach, including the role of women, towards reconciliation and peacebuilding

The Comprehensive Peace Agreement anticipated two key transitional institutions that offer the best opportunity for the international community to provide its full support to the peace process.

In Cairo, in Abuja and in the east, texts were drafted that reflected the spirit of peace, diversity, democratization and power sharing which are at the core of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

Crucially, both parties have quickly and authoritatively reaffirmed their commitment to the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

In my previous reports on the Sudan I consistently voiced the daunting challenges involved in implementing the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

Special emphasis has been put on demobilizing child soldiers within six months of the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

The SPLM, having recently concluded its own peace agreement with the Government of the Sudan, feels encouraged and optimistic that the Comprehensive Peace Agreement will enhance the chances of a peaceful resolution in Darfur and eastern Sudan.

Support to the Comprehensive Peace Agreement is the most promising path to a resolution of other political crises facing the Sudan, most notably in Darfur.

The 9 January signing of the north south Comprehensive Peace Agreement was indeed a historic moment for the Sudan.

The Security Council welcomes the sense of ownership demonstrated by the Sudanese parties in the achievement of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.
