The Governments of our region are united in their call for the creation in our region of a nuclear weapon free zone.

Ours is a region of cruel contrasts.

We know this, for it is all too familiar in areas of conflict in our own region.

Our efforts in establishing partnerships with other developing countries go beyond our immediate region.

One of the guarantees of security and stability in our region is the peaceful settlement of regional conflicts.

The people and Government of Eritrea cannot be blamed for the grave situation that faces our region today.

Our region is a trailblazer in combating the illicit circulation of small arms and light weapons.

For example, peacekeeping and peacebuilding missions continue to enhance peace initiatives in our region.

Farther afield, we have also assisted the responses to protracted crises in Africa, including in the Sudan, the Niger, Malawi and in southern Africa more broadly.

That is the situation for the majority of the countries in our region, as well as for those in other continents, with very few exceptions.

There is an encouraging sense of renewed hope in the emergence of democratic and stable post conflict countries in our region.

The proliferation of ballistic missiles in our region has had an adverse impact on India's security.

In short, this pact with its excrescence had an enormous impact on the history of our region, right up to this day.

Our subregion is of the view that the Convention is an effective tool in the fight against the proliferation of chemical weapons and dual use substances and equipment.

The United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti testifies to the commitment of the international community, in particular of our entire region, to the people of Haiti.

We are convinced of those positions and will work tirelessly to achieve full compliance with all of those rules and provisions, including in our region.

And I had every intention of taking this tribe from being outliers in the Middle East and pushing them over the tipping point towards success.

I believe that the chances for a political breakthrough in our region have never been better.

Turkey s position on Iran s nuclear program has been similarly clear we are categorically opposed to the presence of weapons of mass destruction in our region.

Mine is a country that was obliged to respond to the missile threat introduced in our region, and The Hague Code of Conduct did not address our security concerns.

We hope that the rest of the international community will continue supporting us in our efforts to attain our region's goals for peace, disarmament and development.

In that connection, for the first time in our region, the sixteenth World Festival of Youth and Students was held in Caracas in August 2005 a demonstration of the permanent and tireless struggle for youth and their rights.

The combination of these acts, together with public threats to the very existence of the State of Israel, is moving our region away from the vision of peace and security.

In our own region, initiatives such as the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI) provide valuable examples of how peacebuilding works in practice.

Here, we cannot fail to point out that the one hundredth State to ratify was Mexico, a cherished country from our region.

We must save our region from future confrontations and conflicts.

Taking advantage of the improved investment climate in the country, young people are initiating small scale business ventures in numbers never seen in the history of our region.

We are convinced that only mutual respect and tolerance and the will to recognize historical truth will secure peaceful and good neighbourly relations in our region.

Unfortunately, that is hampered by the embargo imposed on Armenia, as well as by the unwillingness of some countries in our region to engage in such cooperation.

We sincerely hope to be able to end our current dispute once and for all, and are looking forward to working with our brothers and Maghreb partners to strengthen cooperation, stability and integrated development in our region.

The text of the agreement on such a zone has been agreed by five countries of our region and we are pleased that the Kyrgyz Republic is to be the depositary of the treaty.
