G. Sustainable management of land resources 60. Within the framework of the Plan of Action for the Implementation of the World Soils Policy, UNEP, in cooperation with other agencies and organizations, is assessing global soil degradation and is assisting developing countries in designing their national soils policies.

The major land degradation problems in Egypt are related to hydrological constraints which cause waterlogging, salinity and alkalinity, physical constraints such as deterioration of the soil structure and compaction, and biological constraints caused by a decline in soil organic matter leading to declining soil fertility.

The Convention defines desertification as reduction or loss, in arid, semi arid and dry sub humid areas, of the biological or economic productivity resulting from deterioration of the properties of soil, from soil erosion, and from degradation and long term loss of natural vegetation.

In 2006, FAO will implement the Land Degradation Assessment in Drylands programme, which will provide and disseminate a number of information and awareness documents.

This approach contributes to climate change, interrupts hydrological cycles, and causes soil degradation, all of which undermine our planet s ability to produce food in the long term.

Nevertheless, new transboundary initiatives to combat soil degradation have been launched with the support of various development partners, while several projects have been taken on by the NEPAD Environment Initiative.

This involved integrating environmental strategies with development plans and national capacity building initiatives, with particular attention given to the conservation of natural habitats, land degradation, desertification and urban and industrial pollution.
