57 19. Enhancing coordination in the area of international trade law and strengthening the secretariat of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law

(a) To promote appreciation and use of UNCITRAL texts, the International Trade Law Branch Division should increase the range and breadth of its technical assistance in the field of trade law reform.

1. Expresses its appreciation to the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law for completing and adopting the Model Law on International Commercial Conciliation, the text of which is contained in the annex to the present resolution, and for preparing the Guide to Enactment and Use of the Model Law

At that session, UNCITRAL gave guidance to the International Trade Law Branch (subsequently renamed International Trade Law Division) on how to increase cooperation with other organizations that formulate rules on international trade.

His Government looked forward to continued participation in the process of harmonizing and unifying international trade law.

Promotion of wider participation in international trade law conventions and use of model laws

The review by the Office of Legal Affairs of the requirements for the International Trade Law Division has been carried out, the results discussed by the Commission and a resolution adopted.

The International Trade Law Division assisted in the adoption of a legislative guide on insolvency law designed to help countries establish fair and transparent systems to address commercial failure.

She received the venia legendi for private law, commercial law, private international law and comparative law.

Article 1 of the Commercial Code defines a trader as any natural or legal person who engages in trading activity in his own name or on his own behalf as his occupation .

Work on international trade law now incorporates enhanced cooperation with other organizations formulating rules in international trade, under the guidance of UNCITRAL, and a work programme and timetable for expanded technical assistance activities.

To enhance coordination in accordance with its basic mandate and ensure a concerted approach to common issues, the International Trade Law Branch should meet annually with key organizations working on trade law issues to share information and workplans

Noting with satisfaction the completion and adoption by the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law of the Model Law on International Commercial Conciliation,Official Records of the General Assembly, Fifty seventh Session, Supplement No. 17 (A 57 17), annex I.

This self restraint seems logical in light of UNCITRAL's mandate to further the progressive harmonization and unification of the law of international trade .

Emphasizes the need for higher priority to be given to the work of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law in view of the increasing value of the modernization of international trade law for global economic development and, thus, for the maintenance of friendly relations among States

Concerned that activities undertaken by other bodies in the field of international trade law without adequate coordination with the Commission might lead to undesirable duplication of efforts and would not be in keeping with the aim of promoting efficiency, consistency and coherence in the unification and harmonization of international trade law,

The Moot is principally organized by Prof. Eric Bergsten of the Institute of International Commercial Law at Pace University School of Law and takes place principally at the Faculty of Law of the University of Vienna.

The United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) prepared a draft instrument on the carriage of goods with a view to modernizing and universalizing law on the international carriage of such goods.

14. Expresses its appreciation to Gerold Herrmann, Secretary of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law since 1991, who will retire on 31 January 2001, for his outstanding and devoted contribution to the process of unification and harmonization of international trade law in general and to the Commission in particular.

The internship programme is designed to give young lawyers the opportunity to become familiar with the work of UNCITRAL and to increase their knowledge of specific areas in the field of international trade law.

Thailand had participated actively in the work of the Commission and had closely followed the work of other international organizations in the area of international trade law.

The Commission's productivity was extraordinary, as was demonstrated by the significant contributions made since 2000 to the harmonization and progressive unification of international trade law.

4. Recommends also that all States continue to consider implementation of the Model Law on Cross Border Insolvency of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law.

The active pursuit of coordination and cooperation with other organizations in areas of international trade law of mutual interest remained a priority.

The Secretary General's proposal to turn the International Trade Law Service into a division headed by a D 2 director seemed justified, considering the support that this service provided to the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law.
