Landlocked developing countries

This booklet is aimed at policy makers, pulling together evidence regarding the value of coastal ecosystems in terms of coastal protection.

I. Submission by a coastal State

Many Parties, especially those that rely heavily on a single agricultural system, such as nomadic livestock husbandry (e.g. Mongolia) and atoll agriculture (e.g. Maldives), stated that the low productivity of their agricultural system will be exacerbated by the increased erosion and loss of soil fertility resulting from climate change and its adverse impact on groundwater.

In my capacity as Chairman of the Group of Landlocked Developing Countries, allow me further to elaborate on the situation of landlocked developing countries.

It also looked at integrated coastal area and river basin management, which links freshwater and coastal and marine systems, highlighting land based sources of activities affecting the quality and uses of the coastal and marine environment.

Claims for damage to aquatic biota, damage to shoreline resources and lost coastal and marine recreational opportunities ( lost recreational opportunities ) were originally included in the claim for a coastal research centre and marine preserve.

But this is limited to the coastal districts.

The coastal environment has also been extensively damaged.

The situation was worse for landlocked countries.

Shoreline resources Kuwait states that the damage to its shoreline resources resulted in a reduction in the quantity and quality of services provided by different shoreline habitats.

The seasonal variation is not quite as great in the coastal area.

Thus, under the Convention, scientific and technical data are provided by a coastal State for the purpose of supporting particulars of the limits of the continental shelf submitted by that coastal State to the Commission.

In that regard, we, the Group of Landlocked Developing Countries, request that that specific and urgent need of landlocked developing countries be given due attention and consideration.

The Doha round should reflect the particular needs of landlocked developing countries as outlined in the Asunción Platform adopted by the trade ministers of the landlocked developing countries in Paraguay.

They've been around a long time, have been very important to coast communities.

That element is of particular importance, as landlocked developing countries face additional border crossings, which increase transaction costs and discourage trade. Efficient trade facilitating measures would go a long way towards tackling the high trade transaction costs borne by the landlocked developing countries because of their geographical handicaps.

Some areas have never been resettled (such as the coastal region of Java now incorporated into the Ujung Kulon National Park), but much of the coastline is now very densely populated.

The study shows that the major source of litter into the marine environment is from coastal urban centres owing to the lack of coastal solid waste management, to inadequate management or to the failure of such management.
