To address the growing incidence of malnutrition, the Ministry of Health, UNICEF and participating non governmental organizations are involved in supplementary and therapeutic feeding programmes.

The total number of children benefiting from supplementary feeding remained high at 10,000.

Supplementary feeding centres were supplied with UNIMIX, and women apos s groups were established to cultivate home gardens.

Another programme, implemented in partnership with NGOs and community groups, supplemented the nutrition of nursing mothers.

Efforts to expand supplementary and therapeutic feeding centres in accessible areas of the country continue.

In 2003, 390.3 million doses of food supplements were purchased for children under age 5.

Supplementary feeding programmes at primary schools, especially in the areas where the low income population resides, are a means to improve both the nutrition and the learning capability of children from poor families.

The deficit of 24,000 metric tons in supplementary feeding has made it difficult for humanitarian agencies to reverse the prevailing high malnutrition rates.

Widespread malnutrition as a result of war and drought had been documented throughout the country, thereby requiring supplemental feeding programmes on a significant scale.

As of mid 1994 general food distribution, supplementary feeding programmes and harvesting had contributed to an overall improvement in the nutritional status of the population.

Environmental health services are also part of the health programme and so is the supplementary feeding programme to pre school children, pregnant women and nursing mothers.

45. Some 120,000 malnourished children and pregnant and nursing mothers are receiving assistance in 130 supplementary feeding centres in southern Sudan, the transitional zones and in displaced persons apos camps around Khartoum.

Supplementary feeding activities of local health institutions are strengthened through the provision of corn soya blend, sugar, milk, high protein biscuits and salt.

Since September 1993, UNICEF has provided supplementary feeding to some 713,000 vulnerable children and women, an average of about 65,000 per month.

40. To support supplementary feeding operations, UNICEF continued to operate a UNIMIX production facility in Khartoum, which produced an average of 75 tons daily.

It is important to note that some Member States indicated institutional obstacles in their national legislation, which would not allow them to support this financing modality.
