With regard to recommendation 1, the Safety and Security Section at the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG) submitted an updated security strategy and final plan to the security project management team in April 2005, prior to its finalization and submission for approval by the Department of Safety and Security.

Publications and academic outreach are important aspects of the Department's training and promotional activities.

Mr. Amolo (Kenya) said that his delegation supported the efforts of the Department of Safety and Security and acknowledged that it was still in the process of development.

It recognized that, for the Department of Safety and Security, maximum reliance on host Governments was central to operational effectiveness.

This would also include cooperation with the newly created Department of Safety and Security which would be able to utilize information gathered by the cell.

Industry associations work with PSEPC in a forum that permits a broad exchange on information across industry sectors.

Increased security arrangements for the Secretariat were carried out during the past year, including the establishment of a Department of Safety and Security which came into effect in January.

The Section, in consultation and coordination with the management and staff of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations, will coordinate day to day Department of Peacekeeping Operations security issues with the relevant operational units of the Department of Safety and Security and maintain technical lines of communication with the Department of Peacekeeping Operations led field missions.

In resolution 59 276 of 23 December 2004, the General Assembly created the Department of Safety and Security (DSS), which involved the merger of UNSECOORD, the Safety and Security Service, and the field security component of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations.

The Department of Safety and Security has created a multidimensional strategy for communication, information sharing and feedback, under normal circumstances as well as in times of crisis.
