C. Regional disaster response preparedness activities

Disaster preparedness and prevention activities were undertaken in Algeria, Egypt and the Sudan.

During 2004, emergency preparedness activities in the field intensified through increased coordination among emergency preparedness officers and focal points at the regional bureau level.

Activities have focused on malaria, child immunization, emergency preparedness and response to acute nutritional emergencies.

Relevant United Nations organizations and donor Governments should enhance the level of preparedness of disaster prone countries, particularly at the local level, by significantly increasing funding for preparedness activities.

In Kenya, WFP is implementing jointly with the Government of Kenya the Fund for disaster preparedness activities .

Activities aimed at raising the level of preparedness of local communities should take due account of local realities, indigenous coping mechanisms and perceptions of risk.
