While integrated water resource management provides an integrated framework for addressing water issues, countries will want to tailor integrated water resources management plans to their own particular water management needs and objectives.

The Water, Sanitation and Infrastructure Branch has integrated norms of good urban governance into its activities related to water education and management.

Five courses have been offered, namely, water supply technology, hotel management, infectious paediatric nursing, environmental impact assessment and integrated coastal zone management.

Integrated water resources management plans could provide a broad framework to encompass not only water supply and waste water treatment, but also the development of other options, such as demand side management and waste water recycling and reuse.

Capacity building will focus on the development of skills in newer programming areas, including learning and knowledge management, intermediate level capacity building, integrated water resources management and household water treatment.

We note the urgent need for new technologies, better resources and new methods for the integrated management of water resources, the adaptation to climate change and the management of waste.

Countries should adopt time bound environmental targets, particularly for such priorities as forest replanting, integrated water resources management, ecosystem preservation and curbing pollution.

These regional legal instruments set goals and tasks for countries and institutions that are responsible for integrated water resources management in a transboundary context.

They called on Governments to provide greater support for integrated water resources management, a doubling of aid for water and sanitation by 2010 and an integration of human settlements in development strategies.

Experience suggests that a variety of approaches can be used to prepare integrated water resources management plans, including a more comprehensive approach that covers basin wide water management and investment, an ecosystem approach, or an incremental approach focusing on key priorities in accordance with capacities and resources.

Within the framework of the rehabilitation of degraded lands, including integrated water resources management, UNESCO is working on a new interregional project, Sustainable Management of Marginal Drylands (SUMAMAD) , which will benefit north African and Asian countries.
