Unfortunately, even the pre boom years are not a good guide for today s European economy, because something fundamental has changed more quickly than is typically recognized Europe s demographic trends.

This is not only a human rights issue, but also an economic one. Following current demographic trends, by 2040, Roma will comprise roughly 40 of Hungary s working age population.

At the same time, Japan s demographic trends will boost demand for fiscal expenditure, as pension and health care costs rise. So, sooner or later, a tax hike will be necessary.

Advanced countries, with their adverse demographic trends, need migrants, as do developing countries not only for migrants economic contributions, but also for the social and cultural diversity that they bring.

After all, the loss of competitiveness that led to large external deficits remains largely unaddressed, while adverse demographic trends, weak productivity gains, and slow implementation of structural reforms depress potential growth.

The more important reasons for the unease are the negative demographic trends in Russia s far eastern Trans Baikal region, and the fear shared by all of China s neighbors of overweening Chinese power.

This fall in income has been magnified by rising household savings rates, driven by insufficient insurance for health care and old age, the high cost of education, growing income inequality, and demographic trends.

It also carries a real risk of destroying the political and social structures even of countries that are at present stable, especially when combined with demographic trends, such as the alarming growth of urban populations.

And if things look bad for Western Europe, they re worse for the EU s formerly communist newcomers, whose demographic trends imply that average potential growth will nosedive from today s healthy 4.3 per year to just 0.9 after 2030.
